2017 at Bath Pizza Co

What a year it’s been! A huge thank you to all of our customers, producers, suppliers and everyone who has helped us grow over the past 12 months. The Bath Pizza Co team are heading out to Napoli shortly to celebrate a great year and visit some of Europe's most famous pizzerias.

In the meantime, here’s a round up of how 2017 looked and some of our highlights.

January

Welcoming Iford Cider

Now a firm favourite on our bar, Iford Cider are as local as it gets. Just a few miles outside of Bath, Joe and the team produce a cracking range of ciders. Crafted on the Iford Estate in Bradford-on-Avon, we serve Iford Cider’s Medium Dry cider which washes down beautifully with our Tunley Farm Chicken and Pesto pizza.

February

Bringing more Bath Farmers’ Market specials to the menu

Being based at Green Park Station, Bath means we’re spoilt for choice with the Bath Farmers’ Market in town every Saturday. A matter of metres from our oven, we’re able to source the freshest and the best when it comes to quality ingredients and keeping our menu interesting! This year we’ve introduced a range of specials and new permanent Farmers’ Market pizzas to our menu.

March

Getting behind the lens

We worked with a local DoP to produce an little promo video back in February and March. We’d love to know what you think of our short film. Ping us a tweet.

April

The fiver deal lives on

With 12 months under our belt of trading, we decided to keep our £5 lunch deal running as it had been so popular with our customers. By popular demand and with a wonderful loyal customer base we’re pleased to be able to offer this pizza deal every Tues, Weds, Thurs lunch time between 12 and 4pm.

May

Festival season begins

May was a fantastic month as we welcomed a series of festival events with Bath Festivals and Bath Spa University. With Kingswood School performing in the station we greeted hundreds of guests for one of the best atmospheres we’ve seen at Green Park Station.

Bath Spa students hosted a MayFest beer festival and a Food Tour festival where we collaborated with our beer truck and Bratwurst stall. We’re looking forward to partnering again with the university to host more great events in 2018.

June

Celebrating 25 years of Green Park Brasserie

2017 marked 25 years of business for our sister business Green Park Brasserie.

Since picking up the keys in 1992 the business has developed into one of Bath’s most popular independent restaurants with live music four nights a week.

July

Welcoming Marshfield Ices!

We love working with local producers and suppliers. This summer we welcomed Marshfield Ice Cream to our menu. A few miles north of Bath, these guys are kings when it comes to cream and are part of our £12.50 deal.

August

Bath folk festival

Every year the Bath Folk Festival comes to Green Park Station and Green Park Brasserie. This year we welcomed several local musicians to play Bath Pizza Co under the vaulted Victorian roof. We love welcoming these guys who bring a great crowd and a fantastic atmosphere! Keep an eye out for 2018’s live music line up.

September

Bringing the Great Bath Feast to Bath Pizza Co.

Every year we get involved with the Great Bath Feast as Bath celebrates all things food and drink.

This year we put on a local beer festival and live music show as we welcomed a whole host of guest beers from Bristol Beer Factory’s extensive range, a combination of Butcombe guest ales and guest peach lager, Jubel to name a few.

This was one of our most enjoyable days in 2017 and we're now planning more live music session from Easter throughout the summer months - watch this space.

October

Bath Pizza Co goes viral

October was a very busy month for us at Bath Pizza Co. We picked up a Gold Taste of the West Award, welcomed the University of Bath for an Oktoberfest party and made the headlines with our professional pizza job. We later hired the awesome Mike for the roll.

November

Introducing Dough Ball Roulette

Another busy month for the team at Bath Pizza Co with more events and busy evenings as the cold months moved in. We also launched our pizza roulette challenge which ran as a special for the week!

December

Refreshing the bar

With Christmas parties in Bath in full swing, we welcomed new lines to our bar in December.

In addition to the very popular Independence Pale Ale from Bristol Beer Factory and our locally producer cider from Iford Cider a few miles from Bath; we welcomed Stowford Press Cider and Holsten Vier.

Stowford Press, a pale straw, bright and luminous coloured cider has a strong fruity aroma and is developed during the slow maturation period producing a delicious flavour of crisp cider apples.

Holsten Vier, a pale lager was first imported from Germany in 1952 and has been incredibly popular ever since. Holsten Vier and Stowford Press are both part of our £10 pizza and pint offer.

Thank you to everyone who made 2017 an awesome year!

Gold Award for Bath Pizza Co

bath-pizza-co-taste-of-logo.jpg

We're delighted to have been awarded 'Gold' status for the 2017/18 Taste of the West Awards!

Taste of the West are the largest independent regional food group in the UK, championing the fantastic local food and drink from the region across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Supporting Somerset and the West's farmers, producers and suppliers across the region is something we at Bath Pizza Co. are very proud of, enabling us to create fantastic pizza for the people of Bath. To win the Gold award is a great achievement for such a young business.

We make our own dough (and gluten free dough) on site and have been refining our menu over the past 18 months since we opened in April 2016. The award from Taste of the West sits alongside Bath Pizza Co.'s Bath Good Food Awards nomination and The Bath Magazine's 'The Delicious Guide to Bath 2017' feature.

Owner, Alex Peters said: "Winning this award is a reflection of the hard work and commitment to fantastic food from our team. We're incredibly lucky to have such a diverse range of local producers on our doorstep with the Bath Farmers' Market just metres from us every Saturday. Working with a range of farmers and suppliers in Bath and further across Somerset and the South West has allowed us to carefully curate a menu which delights and excites our customers. We're continually testing ideas through our changing specials menu so to receive this award from Taste of the West is credit to our chefs and team who have made Bath Pizza Co. such a success here at Green Park Station."

Planning a Visit to The Bath Christmas Market 2016

visit-bath-christmas-market-2016

We recently revealed 5 of the best things to do in Bath during the Christmas period. Of course the Bath Christmas Market featured alongside some of the city's other wonderful places of interest, including Prior Park Gardens and the Bath Thermae Spa.

We’re preparing our sister business Green Park Brasserie’s Christmas stall and thought we’d put together a handy guide to planning a visit to the Bath Christmas Market 2016 for residents, first timers, and seasoned market goers. So here's our tuppence worth for planning a trip to the Bath Christmas Market this year.

christmas-in-bath-abbey-churchyard

First of all, when is the Bath Christmas Market 2016?

The market runs from 24th November to 11th December this year. The market gets incredibly busy especially during the weekends, so where possible, try to avoid visiting on the 26/27 November, 3/4 December and 10/11 December weekends. Bath sees hundreds of thousands of extra visitors to the city during the market so if you can make a week-day visit, you’ll get a lot more out of your trip.

shopping-in-bath-at-christmas

Why visit the Bath Christmas Market?

The Bath Christmas Market is probably the best Christmas market in the country. Yes, we’re slightly biased, but having visited Christmas markets across the UK in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton, Winchester and a whole load more, none match up to ours!

From the bustling atmosphere created by the lit up wooden chalets and volume of visitors to the presence of the Bath Abbey, architecture of the Roman Baths and cobbled streets and lanes which provide a stunning visual backdrop, this Bath Christmas Market is a cut above the rest. With so many local traders and unique gifts available to buy, the landscape and shopping experience isn’t matched anywhere else.

When does the Bath Christmas Market 2016 open?

The Bath Christmas Market will officially open at 10am on Thursday 24th November 2016. Christmas decorations and lighting is beginning to pop up around the city already though!

What time does the Bath Christmas Market 2016 close?

when-is-bath-christmas-market

Different times throughout the week. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the market will close at 7pm. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Bath Christmas Market will close at 8.30pm. On Sundays the market will shut at 6pm. The market will come to an end at 6pm on Sunday 11th December.

Who is trading at the Bath Christmas Market this year?

Bath’s Christmas Market is one of the UK’s few markets to boast such a high local trader percentage. In fact over 83% of the Bath Christmas Market traders are from Bath and the South West. For a full break down of who is trading and where, check out the themed stall holder break down on the official website.

Where to park for the Bath Christmas Market 2016

Finding parking in Bath throughout the Christmas period is something you might have to ask Santa for as an early gift. Car parks get very full very quickly, however, the city’s park and ride service is highly recommended by the market planning team as the most efficient way to get in and out of the city if you are visiting Bath by car.

Alternatively if you’re coming from afar by rail, the market is less than 5 minutes stroll from Bath Spa train station. Coach trips to the market are also a pretty good option as with dedicated drop off points you won’t have to worry about the parking problems.

Resources to plan your visit to the Bath Christmas Market

Be sure to check out Visit Bath’s dedicated Bath Christmas Market website. The Visit Bath team have provided a fantastic resource to help you plan your visit wherever you’re visiting Bath from.

Come and say hello

You’ll recognise some friendly faces from the Green Park Brasserie who will be trading this year at the Bath Christmas Market. We’ll be keeping them going with the occasional pizza and local ale from our pizza oven here at Green Park Station. The Braz stall will be on the main Abbey Churchyard site. They’ll be selling fantastic German Bratwurst sausages, mulled wine and christmas ciders.

5 Must do things in Bath during Christmas

abbey-green-bath-christmas-market

The countdown to Christmas in Bath is on. The Bath Christmas Market will soon be taking shape and from Wednesday the 16th November, the Christmas lights will be lighting up the city.

Bath certainly comes into its own during the autumn and winter seasons and with Christmas fast approaching, Bath will see an extra 400,000 visitors descend upon the city for the Bath Christmas Market alone.

We’re preparing our special Christmas pizza which we’ll be serving up during the December Bath Farmers’ Markets here at Green Park Station. We’ll be running a slightly smaller seating area throughout December as the Green Park Brasserie marquee takes over the main outdoor space for our Christmas party revellers. We will of course still be offering a takeaway service and will be bringing wood fired pizza from our oven to your door with a little help from our friends, Deliveroo.

In the mean time, we’ve put together a Christmas in Bath guide to help you plan your time, whether you're a visitor or resident. Our list includes and handful of the must-dos, where to get away from the crowds and a few off the beaten path recommendations.

bath-xmas-market

1. Explore the Bath Christmas Market

What Bath guide would be complete without one of the UK’s best Christmas markets? Our sister business the Braz has been trading at the Bath Christmas Market for a number of years now. Set against the backdrop of the Bath Abbey, Roman Baths and Abbey Green the headline event for Christmas in Bath, this is one not to miss.

Top tip: visit midweek and either earlier in the day or later into the evening - the Bath Christmas Market can get very busy with people travelling from all over the UK to make the trip.

best-view-of-bath-at-christmas

2. A winter walk at the National Trust's Prior Park Gardens

Possibly one of Bath’s slightly hidden gems due to its location, the National Trust’s Prior Park Gardens is certainly one of the city’s great assets. About one mile from the city centre of Bath, the Gardens are worth the rather steep hill you'll be met with. Certainly gets the blood flowing.

Take in stunning vistas of what might be the best view of Bath and of course the beautiful Palladian Bridge and architecture of what is now Prior Park School. The gardens were designed in the 18th century by the poet Alexander Pope and the landscape gardener Capability Brown and are best visited on a crisp clear days for those framed views of Bath down through the Prior Park Gardens valley. Walkers can also pick up the Bath Skyline Walk from here which takes a fantastic route across the hills and viewpoints overlooking Bath.

Top tip: get your walking boots out. The pathways can be slippery as you’ll be traversing different terrains! While the walking is up and down hill some of the pathways can be slippery in especially during the winter months.

3. Bath Thermae Spa

Perfect for couples on a weekend break in Bath, you won’t be spending too long in your towelling robe on the terraces during the winter, but the views across the city aren't half bad. Escape the bustling shopping period over Christmas, put your feet up and enjoy the different spa treatments and pools available.

Top tip: check out the Twilight package for those sunsets views.

4. The Holburne Museum and Sydney Gardens

Following the Holburne Museum’s recent redevelopment - completed in 2011, this architectural marvel is worth a visit purely for its design alone - let alone its collection. Combining a stunning 18th century design with a contemporary extension to house new gallery spaces and visitor facilities the Holburne Museum is nestled against Sydney Gardens just outside of Bath’s city centre. The gardens are fantastic for taking in the Avon and Somerset Canal and were often visited by Jane Austen who lived a stone’s throw from the park at 4 Sydney Place.

Back into the warm and within the Museum’s collection you’ll find wonderfully displayed 19th-century paintings and changing temporary exhibitions and displays. Entrance is free, however, temporary exhibitions are paid.

Top tip: Journey from town. The 5 minute walk from Bath city centre to the Holburne Museum will take you along one of Bath's grandest streets, Great Pulteney Street. The Georgian architectural planning of framing buildings up the vista from Laura Place to the Museum is one of Bath’s finest examples of design.

bath-at-christmas-in-the-snow

5. A winter run around the Royal Crescent and Lansdown

Off set a few of those Christmas chocolates in advance with a run around the north of Bath’s city centre and for the more adventurous take on Lansdown hill and the Bath Racecourse - a beautiful stretch of green space to run around on a clear day. A loop starting from the Circus along the Royal Crescent, up to Lansdown past Beckford's Tower and back down will create a great 10km circuit run around Bath for those enjoy a mixed surface and hill run.

Introducing: the Albion Brewing Company, Bath

Next up in our introducing series, we introduce Harry Speller of the Albion Brewing Company here in Bath. Harry talks craft beer revolution, brewing inspiration and the craft scene in Bath.

We’ve been on a mission to find the perfect partner for our pizza, and the hunt may well be over. Bottle, barrel, or glass, we’ve been looking for local ciders, ales and wines that match the wood fired flavours of our pizza.

albion-brewing-company-bath-pizza-co

Somerset isn’t short of craft beer, and we think that the Albion Brewing Co here in Bath, might well be that perfect match. We caught up with owner, brewer, and all round good bloke Harry Speller, on the work behind the scenes of his Bath nano-brewery and his inspiration for the flavours that make up the beers produced by the Albion Brewing Co.

Bath Pizza Co: Great to have you stocked on our bar Harry. As a starter for ten, what can you tell our customers about the Albion Brewing Co and your beer?

Harry: We’re a nano-brewery based here in Bath producing small batches of beer by hand (yes, we even label each bottle by hand as well without a machine). I think someone once classed us smaller than a nano, probably a pico-brewery as we produce perhaps 60 litres a batch.

We took inspiration from the area we live which is up on Poet’s Corner, hence the literary angle of our beer names. Originally we wanted to take on the Bear Brewery name, which was an old brewery where Majestic Wines use to be but as there is the Electric Bear Brewery we ended up calling ourselves the Albion Brewing Company, Albion being the ancient Greek name for Great Britain.

Right now we have two core beers, Paradise Lost and The Tempest. Paradise Lost is an Amber Ale, whilst The Tempest is a Rye beer with hints of Juniper. We are also planning at least one seasonal brew as well, so watch this space!

Bath Pizza Co: How long have you been brewing?

Harry: Like many people we started from home brewing about a couple of years ago. We had great feedback from friends and family, which we used to refine our beers. Brewing commercially was bit of an accident, or rather it all started with that simple question “How hard could it be?” Well as it turns out, quite hard! Especially going through all the paperwork needed to get set.

Our first batch we brewed on the 18th April 2016 and we haven’t looked back since. The support from the local community has been fantastic and we’ve been getting lots of good feedback which we use in refining our beers further.

Bath Pizza Co: The juniper works really well with the flavours from our wood fired pizza, as a new(ish) brewer are there any specific trends in craft beer that have stood out for you over the last year?

Harry: I think there have been a few things I’ve noticed anecdotally. Interestingly I think food pairings is something I’ve noticed a lot recently. We have a head chef in the family so he’s been good to bounce ideas off when it comes to beer and food.

I think you’re also seeing more creative and adventurous beers popping as well, Milk Stours, Oak Aging, Sours and a host of other styles beyond the Pale Ales and IPA. I was recently in the Bath Brewhouse and was blown away by Wild Beer’s Millionaire, a Chocolate and Salted Caramel Milk Stout. Recently DIPA (Double IPAs) seem to be rage and related to that beers with stronger ABVs. If you go into somewhere like Independent Spirits for example, seeing the huge range of styles in fantastic.

Then I think there are subtle changes. The ability to serve beer in smaller measures, namely ⅓ of a pint and ⅔ of pints I think makes a big difference to creativity. In some sense the humble full pint does restrict the style of beers you can produce. Making a 9% DIPA for example wouldn’t make much sense for a pint! Finally you are seeing more cans appearing as breweries use them to package their beers.

Bath Pizza Co: The craft revolution has been huge across London and the UK. Gin, beer, many other areas of the food and beverage sector have been shaken up over the past two years. Where do you think Bath (and Somerset) sits in this movement - are we keeping up with the rest of the country?

Harry: I think the food scene has certainly accelerated in Bath, you can see that in the quality of the restaurants and other eateries in Bath. The farmers market at Green Park Station is a great source of local produce and food, whilst around Bath you see a wide range of places to eat for all budgets and tastes.

On the beverage scene, I think we are probably are lagging a bit against places like London and Bristol where the Craft Beer scene is far more established. But I think we will get there, for example we do have great Ciders and there is Bath Gin. Plus more pubs are catering for the craft beer scene as well which can only be a positive.

Bath Pizza Co: Any other local craft places we and our customers should check out in Bath?

Harry: Have to admit one of the great things about being a brewer is that it gives me an excuse to visit pubs for research purposes!

Some of my favourite places has to be Chapter One on London Road and the Bath Brewhouse (a stone’s throw from Green Park Station). Other places that’s also worth a visit is the Taproom (open on Friday’s and Saturdays) at the Electric Bear Brewery, Hunter & Sons, Gascoyne Place and I recently tried the New Inn on Monmouth Place (which as well as great beers do some pretty tasty burgers).

If you’re looking to buy beer then certainly Independent Spirits has a great range of Craft Beer. Wolf Wine in Green Park Station is great for Craft Wines from tiny independent vineyards. And lest I forget The Canary Gin Bar for it’s massive selection of gins.

Bath Pizza Co: What can we expect from the Albion Brewing Co in the next few months?

Harry: We have a seasonal beer planned which we’re aiming for the October time-frame. Otherwise our main plan is to keep brewing, refining our beers and focus on the local market. The focus is on making quality beers and to keep getting better.

The reality is that It’s an industry that is very competitive with a lot of breweries out there. Having said that there is also a great community spirit amongst the brewers I’ve met. Through talking to them, sharing war stories and advice I find I’m constantly learning new ideas and techniques.

Bath Pizza Co: What inspires or influences your ingredients and brewing technique?

Harry: I think it’s one big melting pot of various influences. Some of it is historical, Bath has a rich brewing history with perhaps 30+ breweries over the last 200 years. So we occasionally look at older styles for inspiration.

I also do a lot of travelling and that’s also been a big source of inspiration. Places like Belgium and Germany have been great to try their styles of beer. Another country that has been a big source of inspiration is the US, it was during my first visit there about seven years ago that I was introduced to a craft beer. It was perhaps the moment that got me back into beer again after a long break where I was mostly drinking wines and spirits. Certainly when I go over there I do try and visit a bar to try something from their huge menus!

Plus we like to mix styles or techniques. Paradise Lost for example, started out as a old style Mild which was generally stronger than today. But we tweaked it a bit to add a bit more hop aroma and finish. The Tempest, the inspiration came from a friend who thought a gin flavoured beer could be a great idea. We took that idea, did some research (coming across things like Finland’s Sahti beer) and worked out a style to brew.

Bath Pizza Co: An absolute pleasure Harry, thanks for your time, we look forward to trying more from the Albion Brewing Co in the coming months!

Rebecca Leach, Marketing and Venue Manager at Green Park Station, commented, “Bath has needed an affordable and delicious street food hub for a long time, much like the success stories of its Bristol and London counterparts. Our new food quarter embraces local culinary heroes and rejects food snobbery. We’re talking big flavours and fresh ingredients cooked quickly before your eyes, with modest price tags to boot. Visit our markets and you can now choose from an enviable range of authentic hot dishes from the aromatic, spicy and fruity to the rich, creamy and tender. Whatever tickles your taste buds, the time has come to swop your corner shop meal deal for some proper nosh.”

in partnership with bath pizza co

Bath Pizza Co, whose recent launch was in part inspired by the Bath Farmers’ Market to create a local menu, will be offering free pizza slices and the chance to learn to throw dough.  Look out for samples of Ted’s Wild Game, Homewood Three Cheeses and Northend Farmer’s Veg featuring Cranborne Chase venison, Homewood’s artisan cheese and Chris Rich’s finest veg selection. Customers tagging their pictures with #socialslice will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win two free pizzas of their choice.

“We’ve got some great producers on our doorstep and we’re really excited to be creating a pizza menu based on Somerset’s fantastic artisan goods” enthused Alex Peters of Bath Pizza Co, adding “we’re fresh, local and bespoke. We don’t buy into the frozen pre-made game that the big boys of the pizza world play. We’re really excited to be offering a local, healthier and better product - and the wood-fired flavours from our oven are fantastic!”

Bath Pizza Co's New Bath Farmers' Market Specials Announced!

We built Bath Pizza Company on the ethos of being a community and collaborative focussed business; eager to work with the fantastic farmers, food producers, and brewers in Bath and Somerset. Now we're proud to announce that we have new pizza options on our menu that focus on the Bath Farmers’ Market that runs here in the station on Saturday mornings. We’ve been ratio weighing and ingredient testing on our new Bath Farmers’ Market special pizzas for the last few weeks; so we’re pretty chuffed to officially announce them!

So without further ado, here are our new headline acts...

Ted's Wild Game

If you’re a regular to the Bath Farmers’ Market, you’ll certainly know Ted. Selling quails eggs, venison and wild boar sourced from Cranborne Chase, Ted is a old stalwart of the market offering genuine quality produce from the stunning Cranborne Chase landscape that sprawls across Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset.

At Bath Pizza Co, we cook Ted’s venison with red wine and onion in our wood fired oven to act as a perfect topping on a white dough base. Ted's Wild Game is our headline act, leading the way for our white pizzas (no tomato and herb sauce).

Tunley Farm Special

Tunley Farm’s smoked sausage know famously as the “huge pole” sausage is the star of our Tunley Farm Special. Mark from Tunley can be found most days of the week here in Green Park Station, and after a serious tasting session we found that the combination of the huge pole smoked sausage, sun blushed tomatoes, and onions was the perfect pizza to celebrate our Green Park Station neighbour’s produce.

Homewood 3 Cheeses

Angela and Tim have been supplying our sister biz, the Braz for a fair few years now, so we’re delighted to feature the Homewood special on our menu. Based out in Ubley (towards Bristol) we’ve been working with the artisan cheesemakers to come up with the perfect recipe. After some more tasting sessions (we’re getting through some serious pizza tasting!) the combination of ricotta, halloumi and old demdike made the perfect Homewood Cheeses pizza.

Introducing: Ordoo. Why wait?

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do at Bath Pizza Co. Whether that’s with our partners who create our local produce in Bath and Somerset, our friends around the South West who make fantastic ciders and ales, or our technology partners.

In our introducing series we’ll be telling the stories of our partners, how we work with them and the story behind their business. In this article we introduce Ordoo CEO, Tom Dewhurst who we recently caught up with in a Q&A session here at Green Park Station, Bath.

Bath Pizza Co: Hey Tom, thanks for coming down to Bath Pizza Co and seeing us in action. Can you tell us a bit about Ordoo?

TD: Sure. Ordoo is an app for busy people to save time collecting coffee and lunch. You can now order and pay in advance at your favourite cafes, coffee shops and lunch spots to avoid waiting around and to earn loyalty rewards on your smartphone.

We're based in the University of Bath Innovation Centre by the bus station and we're really excited to be working some amazing local independent businesses. Bath is a great place to start a company and we are really enjoying the feedback we're receiving.

"customers were avoiding venues with consistent queueing problems as this creates a poor customer experience. the root cause of this poor customer experience derived from inefficient payment systems, cash handling and laborious ordering processes".

- Tom Dewhurst, Ordoo CEO

Bath Pizza Co: We’ve been using Ordoo now at Bath Pizza Co for a few months and are really impressed with the product you’ve built. How exactly did the idea come about?

TD: I had the idea whilst at University over 14 months ago. I was stuck in this 15 min queue, on my phone, and it was taking so long and I was so busy that I was actually reading an article for my dissertation. This was on the factors that drive adoption of digital payments amongst the youth market. As I stood in this queue, this particular paper got me thinking that the future of mobile payments is mobile ordering – as this added value to the boring process of payment. This would change the Point of Sale for the hospitality industry and digitalising this process would make it more efficient process – saving everyone time.

I looked into the problem further and it was obvious that customers were avoiding venues with consistent queueing problems as this creates a poor customer experience. The root cause of this poor customer experience derived from inefficient payment systems, cash handling and laborious ordering processes. Worst of all, many venues don't know who their loyal customers are and can't connect with them. If I went to a venue – asked loyal customers – Markas, Jess, Dave – how do you contact then and reach them with personal offers – they can't. They might have a loyalty card but they don’t have any information on who that is and what they order.

So I created Ordoo to address this problem and to provide a consistently better experience for the venue and the customer.

Bath Pizza Co: You’ve been working across Bath and Bristol for a while, what are the plans for the next 12 months?

TD: Yes, we first launched in Bath in January and then Bristol in April, so it's been moving pretty quickly! We have found the majority of the forward thinking, early adopting venues in the area. We are now pushing to get more people to try out the app.

If things continue to develop as they have then the next 12 months will be a whirlwind! We're largely focusing on our 3 month plans to launch in London and Cardiff, so this is very exciting. If these go well then I look forward to seeing where we will be in 12 months...

Bath Pizza Co: I expect you get to try a pretty good range of food and cuisines as you meet more and more businesses?

TD: Ha. Yes, this is definitely one of the perks of the job. Our partners are very generous and we are offered loads of great coffee and lunch. We only work with the best venues, so this pays dividends. The team also get free app credit so we go around trying out the wonderful selection of food and drink that can be found on Ordoo.

Bath Pizza Co: So hand on heart, which restaurants and coffee bars have you been most impressed with so far?

TD: We really value all our partners. It is clear that the partners who work closely with us get the most out of the platform. The feedback we received from some of our first partner venues, such as Forum and Bath Coffee co, was extremely valuable. They are now amongst our best venues. Over the last few months we've been working with loads more lunch venues and they are performing really well. We are excited to be working with Bath Pizza Company to push your lunch menu and save people time who don't want to wait around for the pizza to be made.

Bath Pizza Co: We’ve obviously seen huge growth and change in how as consumers we experience and purchase food; what is the next step in making the consumers’ experience better or easier?

TD: It's so important that customers receive a great experience when eating out. Especially in for lunch and takeaway, there must be a significant emphasis on convenience and efficiency. Customers came to enjoy the quality food and making this process quick and painless makes everyone happy!

Our core mission is to ensure a consistently amazing customer experience. We strongly believe this derives from saving people valuable time and creating personal relationships between customers and venues. We like to think that the Ordoo app achieves this and is the next step forward in the food and drink industry.

Bath Pizza Co: As you’ve given up your time with us we thought we’d allow you a full on shameless plug for Ordoo. Why should people download your app?

TD: Whoops, I've been plugging it all along! Well, for all the reasons mentioned above really. We're a local technology business looking to support local independent venues as their digital enabler.

If you like getting take away coffee or going out for lunch then the app is definitely for you. Don't waste time standing in queues and order ahead. What are you waiting for?

Bath Pizza Co: Tom, thanks for joining us, it’s been a pleasure!

TD: Thanks for the opportunity Alex. I look forward to working closely together at the Bath Pizza Co!

Introducing: Homewood Artisan Cheeses

Bath Pizza Co announces Homewood 3 Cheese special

We’re pretty chuffed to be announcing our first Bath Farmer’s Market special pizza. We’ve been testing ratios and flavours all week and can now announce our new Homewood 3 Cheeses pizza here at Bath Pizza Co.

The Homewood 3 Cheeses pizza at Bath Pizza Co., Green Park Station

The Homewood 3 Cheeses pizza at Bath Pizza Co., Green Park Station

Inspired by the produce at the Bath Farmer’s Market in Green Park Station, we’re announcing a series of new pizzas, based on the ingredients created by food producers and farmers who make up the Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning.

Based in Ubley, Somerset, Homewood artisan cheesemakers are Tim and Angela - the team behind Homewood Cheeses. We caught up with them at the Bath Farmer’s Market for a Q & A session on the world of cheese and the new Homewood 3 Cheeses pizza!

Bath Pizza Co: Tim, Angela, it’s great to have Homewood Cheeses on our pizza menu! Please introduce yourselves and your background in the artisan cheese world.

Tim and Angela: We met each other when we had a stall next to each other trading at the Tobacco Factory Market in Bristol. Tim was making cheese for another company, as he has been since 1999, and Angela was baking cakes and making preserves. Then only a monthly market, it took several months to find out each others names! But love eventually blossomed and we decided to start making our own cheeses in 2008. A chance introduction to a sheep dairy farmer followed and we have been working with sheep milk ever since. We moved our cheese making to its new home in Ubley in 2014 and love being in the Chew Valley.

Bath Pizza Co: We’ve been tasting the new Homewood 3 Cheeses pizza this morning, what do you think?

Tim and Angela: It tasted great. A really fresh flavour from the tomato base and great balance between the cheeses.

Bath Pizza Co: We’re currently using the combination of the Ricotta, Halloumi and Old Demdike, which other cheeses might work well on pizzas as we move through the seasons?

Tim and Angela: In the spring the Fresh Ewes Cheese is perfect for waking the taste buds out of winter. As we move into Autumn we love the robust flavour of the Pickled Ewes Cheese and pairs especially well with autumn squashes. Come the winter Chattox comes into its own. Made late summer and lightly pressed, by winter the flavour has developed to a full round intensity.

Bath Pizza Co: We’re huge fans of the Ricotta, can you tell us a little about the making process?

Tim and Angela: The ricotta is one of our favourites too, a really summery cheese. It won a Gold medal at this year’s British Cheese Awards. Producing ricotta is very satisfying as it is an incidental part of the halloumi making process. The halloumi curds are cooked in the whey after pressing; this is what makes it not melt and gives it the squeak! As we heat the whey for this, the ricotta is the whey protein that separates out during heating. As it forms it collects at the top of the pan and we just scoop it off into cloths to drain. We don't add any salt to our ricotta so is perfect for sweet or savoury dishes.

Bath Pizza Co: Do you have a most popular product that always sells well?

Tim and Angela: At the market it is definitely the halloumi, especially at this time of year. But with our restaurant customers the chefs love the versatility of the Fresh Ewes Cheese.

Bath Pizza Co: Which other markets around Bath and Somerset can we find you at?

Tim and Angela: As well as the Farmers Market in Green Park Station on a Saturday, we can also be found at the Frome Independent on the first Sunday of the month. The whole town centre is taken over by stalls selling everything from street food to local crafts, bric-a-brac and of course artisan foods and cheese!

Bath Pizza Co: Thanks very much Tim and Angela!

Soon you’ll be able to order the Homewood 3 Cheeses to your door via Deliveroo. In the meantime, head down to Green Park Station, Bath where you can order or try a taster on a Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market.
